Chic workhorse to keep your air clean!

We live in southern California, and my partner has the terrible allergies!Come spring, it’s 6 straight months of red, watery, itchy eyes and discomfort. Could we leave California, sure! But we each choose our hard. To make things a little easier, we ordered this air purifier to help with the particulates and allergens and just to make air quality all around a little better, even when the world is on fire around us.The air purifier is incredibly easy to set up out of the box with easy to follow instructions. It has multiple settings to adapt to your particular needs, and auto indicating lights to help you quickly understand air quality or when your filters need a quick change. The auto setting is great, when I am cooking you can hear it working overtime. Bonus: my house doesn’t smell like fish for days after I decide to cook it. The filters are high quality and keep our home air a little fresher than before. Also it looks great! With two colors, it blends into the decor without looking like the typical eyesore.Highly recommend Coway airmega to keep your family’s breathing easy

    Works great!

Finally got to put this to the test as my area experienced some very smoky air. My eyes and chest would burn when I went outside, but inside with this on I was 100% fine. I’m extremely sensitive to bad air, so if I’m doing well then you know anyone will be okay. It’s also great for day to day use as dust and allergens naturally builds up in the air of indoor spaces. If I’m feeling snuffly, turning this on helps me breathe easy. The lowest setting truly is whisper quiet, you can run it all night around the soundest of sleepers without anyone even noticing any noise. The highest setting is the opposite, quite loud, but it’s good for if you need bad air cleaned ASAP. Don’t think of the speed settings as “low, medium, high”, think of them as “Silent mode, normal, MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE.”Some people like ion mode, some people don’t. There’s an easy on/off button for that here, so whatever you like this air purifier will do it for you. The fact that it takes a standard filter size also makes it very versatile. A big problem with air purifiers is that if they take a weird custom size/shape of filter, it’s nearly impossible to find proper replacement filters. For this, you’re always going to be able to find a replacement to fit into it no problems. The only less than ideal thing about this is that you can’t run this right next to sensitive electronics. It can create interference that might upset delicate electronics like computers, so it needs to be at least a few feet away from anything of that sort. That can be difficult in a small space. I haven’t had any problems with my ‘dumb’ electronics (microwave, non-smart TV, remote control, that sort of thing) being neighbors with it though.

It’s worked really well for the year-ish I’ve had it

Shopping for an air purifier might be one of the most headache-inducing purchases (that isn’t a house, car, or insurance plan) in existence. So many factors have to be taken into consideration such as room size, the type of filtration, electricity costs, filter costs, noise level, durability, and effectiveness. In my air purifier research, I watched countless videos, read countless articles, and almost pressed the purchase button on countless units. All while growing overwhelmed by the sheer number of recommendations and dishonest manufacturers. After a lot of mind-numbing research, I eventually settled on this Coway unit and am very happy with the decision. I keep it in my 150 square foot bedroom on speed 2 (ionizer off) at all times. This gives me over 5 air changes per hour, and speed 2 only uses 8 watts of electricity (according to my research) so it had no noticeable effect on my electric bill. What it has had a noticeable effect on is the air quality. I find less dust on furniture and none in the air. I don’t wake up congested anymore. The air purifier gets rid of that smell when you just vacuum, litter box odors, and the dust that is kicked up when you clean the litter box. Filters are affordable when you take into account that you only need to purchase a replacement pack annually. My unit has worked well for the time that I’ve had it (and many other users have said their Coway Airmega units have lasted 4-7+ years) so the product seems durable. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and glad that I get to breathe fresher air. I can see why this unit is so highly recommended. It does what it’s supposed to do, and while some may find the design polarizing, I like it. It’s unique and interesting.

Excellent air purifier – easy to use

We buy a surprising number of air purifiers, and this is one of our favorites. Easy to use, easy to change, and not ugly to look at. And it works. I especially love the Econ, which I can set while I’m away and not needlessly eat up the filter and/or waste energy. We have one in several rooms of our house and in our office. Filters are not cheap, but that is true about all purifiers these days. They are quiet and do NOT give off any strange smell like one we bought last year from a different manufacturer.

    Highly effective, affordable air purifier

This air purifier is very effective at removing odors, germs and other contaminants from the air. It was very easy to set up—you just have to remove the plastic packaging from the HEPA and odor filters, put them back in place, put the cover back on, and start the machine. The whole unit is pretty light weight, well built and sturdy, so it’s very easy to move it from room to room. The cover comes off easily but stays firmly in place otherwise. It’s easy to clean the outside and replace the filters. Since I started using this product, my air quality has significantly improved. I really love the air quality indicator light. I know for sure that it works, as I brought it into my kitchen after a small grease fire and it initially turned red, then quickly turned blue once it filtered all the smoke out of the air. The rest of the buttons and settings are easy to read and intuitive to use. I keep mine set to Eco, which works really well. The odor removing function is great and highly effective. My only complaint is that when the fan is on the highest speed, it is quite loud. It actually sounds like you’re on an airplane! And when it’s on the Eco setting, it sometimes cycles through to the highest fan speed for brief periods of time, and the suddenly loud noise occasionally startles me. The other fan speeds are pretty quiet and barely noticeable. Otherwise, I have no complaints about this product and am very happy with my purchase.

Astoundingly effective, whisper quiet, highly recommend.

I bought a $90 tower purifier which took a long time to clear the air and which was noisier than a jet engine. I lived with it, but when the Canadian wildfire smoke descended upon us in NYC, I loaned it to my downstairs neighbor, who had elderly and special needs family members, and I ordered this as a replacement. It’s more than double the cost of the other unit, but based on the reviews from the New York Times and other review sites, the quality and performance are well worth the investment. So I splurged and got this unit. While I was waiting for it to arrive, the air pollution got really bad and I had been coughing, eyes were watering and I was forced to wear an N-95 mask at home just to breathe. When the purifier finally arrived, I turned it on and the sensor light went red to indicate the high level of contamination in the air. I opened the doors of every room of my apartment to let it go to work and after a few minutes at full power, the light turned from red to purple, and about 5 minutes later, it went blue. I took my mask off and the air was pure and fresh. It is an absolute superhero at cleaning a large volume of air very quickly. I was thoroughly impressed. The sensor is very sensitive and will turn purple if you are just cooking something that releases strong scents into the air (sauteeing onions and peppers, etc.) and it goes red if you’re burning anything.Another upside is that my kitchen smoke detector has stopped going off if I’m grilling something, because the purifier keeps the air quality under control. At the highest setting, it’s about as loud as my old purifier at the middle setting, which is to be expected, as you would only set it that high to quickly clear out a room or if there’s smoke from cooking, etc.But the massive volume of clean air it blows out in exchange for that short term annoyance is staggering. However, at the 2nd highest setting it is barely detectable, producing a pleasant, white noise background sound that you quickly tune out. It makes falling asleep very easy, and if you have the air conditioner on you can’t hear the purifier at all.At it’s lowest setting, it blows out a nice stream of air but is utterly and completely silent. You couldn’t even hear it at night time in a small, quiet room with the door shut. Amazing. They say you never regret buying the best. They know what they’re talking about. This is worth every penny and then some. 5 stars, all day.

    Clean Air Ninja

My home backs up to open fields and while it affords a beautiful view, the year round dust and pollen is problematic. I also have two Boxers who shed like it’s their job. So between the dust, dander, pet hair and pollen I developed adult onset allergies. After trying several highly rated air purifiers, and much research, I ran across the Coway AP-1512HH in early 2015 and decided to give it a try. It was the best decision I could have made.1. The Coway is highly effective. During the spring when pollen counts are highest, the unit keeps my indoor air noticeably cleaner. I rarely need to take OTC allergy meds, and my dogs no longer have watery eyes.2. On low setting, the Coway is silent. I have two units running now on opposite ends of a really large open family room / kitchen space and I can’t hear them. On its’ highest setting, the Coway is about as loud as low/medium settings on other brands that I have tried. I never have to turn up the television volume because of this unit – which was not the case with other brands.3. Economical and durable. My first Coway purchased in early 2015 runs 24×7 365…I only turn it off when I’m leaving town for a few days or longer. It runs flawlessly and performs today as effectively as it did when I first purchased the unit. In addition, I have been unable to detect any measurable increase in my electricity bills.4. Auto setting works well – increases fan speed when a change in air quality is detected. For example, if I open the door to the backyard frequently within a short span of time, the unit picks up speed, clears the air, then returns to low when the air quality improves. The Coway also has a sense of humor – ramping up to the highest setting about 10 minutes after I start cooking. And now, with two units running, BOTH seem to take issue with my culinary skills simultaneously. Humph…5. Maintenance is easy. I vacuum the pre filter once a month – it takes two minutes, and I am constantly astonished by the amount of dog hair and dirt it collects. The carbon filters should be changed every 6 months – I flip mine once after 60 days, then replace at about 4 – 5 months depending on how dirty it is. HEPA filter should be changed once a year, and so far, that has been the case for me – probably because I diligently maintain the pre-filters. I found an after market compatible brand of carbon filters on Amazon at a much better price than the Coway replacement kit – which is why I don’t mind changing the carbon more frequently than recommended. The only “complaint” I have is that the air quality indicator light is about the size of a quarter and bright enough to send a signal Mars. I had to cover the light with several layers of blue painters tape then use a black marker on the tape to block the light. There is no way to change the light level setting on the unit. This is an excellent air purifier – the best of many that I have tried. So effective that I now have two in my home. Well worth the price – highly recommend.

Soothing sound that helps me sleep and keeps my air smelling fresh as can be!

Got this when it was on sale. I waited patiently for the price to get lower as after doing much research on air purifiers this one is the rated the best all over the internet. While I do not know about all the other functions or haven’t really messed with it, I will tell you this much… It has improved my air quality in my entire apartment. Whenever I have it on, it smells super fresh and clean almost soothing. When it is on the high setting it is rather loud, but the noise to me is soothing and actually helps me sleep. I like it that you can set it to turn off after a few hours. So far after months and months of use, the filter is still in great shape. I am so happy with this purchase that I have recommended it to my family. I am sure by how sturdy it is that it will last for years.Overall, this purchase is worth it to clean your air and your life. The air we breathe is as important as the water we drink and everyone deserves to have pure air!

    EXCELLENT PURIFIER!

I don’t want to be one of those giddy-with-first-impressions folks in not testing a product thoroughly for months before posting a review… but this thing makes me wanna do just that. It arrived simple & understated.. and by that I mean, unpacking was easy and it did not take brute force or cleaning stray pieces of styrofoam for 30 minutes after unboxing. It slid out, I removed two pieces of protective styro caps, and unwrapped the shrink wrap. I took off the plastic wrap from the filters (which were already in place so I didn’t have to read a book of instructions first to figure out where to put them). Then I simply plugged this sucker in, and it worked on auto right out of the box. It was like unboxing an Apple product — so intuitive, so seamless, so simple. Kudos to manufacturers. And of course, as first impressions go… it looks good. So I love it even more because it’s pretty.Aesthetics aside, it is also built well… and perfectly sized. I attached photos to show that it’s not too tall, nor is it too deep. It is a bit shorter than my nightstand, which is of an average height. It’s a bit on the wide-side, but you can position it however you see fit. It does need about a foot on the right side to allow for proper air flow, and probably a good idea to keep the front end free & clear since the “circle” is from where it pulls in air… but I found this guy could be positioned in many places throughout my home without being an eyesore. I have it in my bedroom currently, but I plan to buy one for my family room as well, and maybe the basement also. It really does work. My bedroom is often very stuffy, especially in the winter when we have the heat temperature set to 73 degrees — I like it warm & toasty, but my nasal passages feel otherwise. I do suffer from pollen allergies, as well as mild allergies to dust mites, grass, ragweed, mold spores, and pet dander (although I still have 2 shed-heavy fur-babies.) But my allergies are never bad enough to warrant any real attention, I just suffer through it since they’re pretty mild. HOWEVER, I keep saying mild when in all reality, I didn’t know the difference between no allergy and mild allergy until sleeping one night with this purifier running. Man what a difference. My nose was not all dry and cracked up feeling on the inside. It also was not runny or scratchy, which is how it often feels after running my humidifier all night (which I run to keep my nose from feeling so dry!) This machine does not mask the issue, or dampen it, or freeze/cold draft it away…. it CLEANS THE AIR. I know, I know… it’s hard to imagine, but boy is it easy to feel. I slept for the last 2 nights like a newborn baby. Granted, I’ve only had it for 2 days but the difference from walking into my bedroom vs the other rooms of my home, cannot be ignored. My home isn’t particularly old, or stuffy, or dirty, or dusty. Yes we have pets, but I am a Dyson maniac and we have a brand new HEPA HVAC filtration system; we have our ducts cleaned regularly; and, there are no smokers or other reasons for contaminated air (at least that I can find.) However, when plugging this thing in… it ran a blue and then purple light for a bit on auto, but then changed to RED (which freaked me out a bit as it sounds rather aggressive). And it ran that way for about 10 minutes. I left it to its job, and when I returned a little while later, it was back to a blue light and I could barely hear it running anymore… but the air did in fact feel lighter, crisper, and easier to breathe. It felt much like the very first time I walked onto my hotel balcony in Vancouver, Canada and took in a giant breath. It just felt… clean.Air quality is a legitimate thing, and having poor air to breathe makes life a less tolerable for people with allergies or lung issues. Again, not something I suffer from necessarily, but I appreciate the cleaner air this provides nonetheless. So I cannot imagine how much better breathing could be for someone that does have serious allergies, asthma, or other breathing troubles. I would say this gem is a no brainer, if you do. But even if you don’t, you’ll still notice the difference after plugging this guy in and letting it run for about the first hour.I do think the auto feature could become a bit of a power monger as I have never witnessed it turn off after being on auto as if to say “okay, I’m done. All clean.” So I do set the timer feature when I’m not going to be upstairs and I shut it off when I’m leaving the house for awhile. Another thing to note is that there are studies about potential harmful effects to lungs when using the UV and ion cleaning features. It is recommended that you only use these settings when not in the house as breathing in UV treated air is said to be harmful as a result of O3 air, similar to breathing in air high in ozone levels. So I only set my purifier with these features when not in the room.I can’t yet speak to durability or filter tolerance, but they are priced reasonably enough that changing once or twice a year would be totally acceptable. I will update if I find that longevity or level of purifying impact worsens, or if cleaning/upkeep isn’t as great with this machine moving forward, but for now… I am a Coway air purifier believer.** UPDATE – after 7 months of constant use, I will say that my initial reactions were still pretty accurate in that this purifier does do what it claims to do. I notice that it is reactive to smells, smoke and other air-purity issues when they are occurring, even when I am simply cooking sausage or something extra smokey or fragrant in the kitchen — while I have this unit upstairs in my bedroom, which is a considerable distance from the kitchen (bedroom in front of the house on 2nd floor, kitchen in the back of the house on the 1st floor.) So I know that it indeed works because I can hear it begin to run rapidly when I accidentally burn something or even when making bacon or something that has a smell or odor. I also know that it is filtering dust and pet hair, because both of my Coway purifiers (I have one upstairs and the tower unit downstairs) needed HEPA filter replacements at 6 months. The manufacturers suggestion is 6 months for the carbon odor filter, and 1 year for the thick, HEPA filter.. but my HEPA filter was so dirty at 6 months that the “change filter” light came on for the tower unit, so I figured I would change this 1512HH unit at the same time, and it definitely needed it. The filters were both clogged with so much dirt, dust and pet hair.. I couldn’t believe this stuff was floating around my house for it to grab. In fact, even strands of my hair were in the filter! And my hair is pretty long, well below shoulder-length. I figure it must have sucked it in from the floor. Pretty cool purifier… I still give it 5 stars and 2 thumbs up after 7 months of use.

Best for smoke, cook smells, best Auto sensor

Daughter bought for home, her review:house has some mold issues but moreso multiple smokers and neighbors with trash/recycling that makes me sick every trash day. I have Environmental Illnesses (MCS, allergic reactions, etc). This purifier has a powerful fan and is good size, heavy. I used it in a med size room and in a living room/dining that connects entire floor. Also had Winix 5200, Trusens Z2000. Coway is best for VOCs and cooking smells didn’t ruin the purifier like it did the Winix. On auto the sensor on the Coway is very sensitive to smoke and kicks into turbo to clean the air. Unfortunately I had cheap hybrid mattress that contained something that got into my room and I’ve had a hell of a time getting it out and the coalway did help but it got into the machine and every time I turn it on it simply just spreads it around my room again so unfortunately the co-way and the mattress had to be returned (I’ve heard this is a common complaint with allergy suffers because of the VOCs and even possibly mold retained within latex and memory foam that is used in even regular spring mattresses nowadays. )However I will be buying another one this winter in order to deal with incense smoke or herbal concoctions being burned in my apartment by my roommates. I have to say that the Winx 5200 dealt with mold a little better. This unit does take a lot of wattage compared to units with the new DC motors from Europe, such as Trusens about 80 watts I believe but that’s probably on turbo you can call the company and get the wattage of each speed I suppose. This place has wiring that hasn’t been updated so we use DC motor units in the summer when the air conditioners are plugged in and Coway or Winx in the winter months when the windows are closed and you need strong purifiers because there’s hardly any ventilation. We’ve also used an older model purifier from Alen which is a monster however that got ruined by the VOCs from the mattress. I still feel as if the Coway 1512 HHS is better for smoke and VOCs compared to even the old Alen model. The filters are easy to find. This model has a washable carbon filter with a honeycomb screen containing actual pellets of carbon. We did find some dust on the inside HEPA filter because it comes through the pre-filter and through what space there is between the carbon pellets of the honeycomb shapes containing them in the carbon filter. If dust is your major concern you could probably use the 1512HH which has the older sheet type carbon filter but because of the issue with VOCs and smells I’m not risking anything and I’m going to keep using this model. I have a very hard time with mites both dust mites and whatever else is around in the Northeast and running a purifier like this constantly makes it so I don’t have to vacuum all the time and my allergy is severe I actually feel the creepy crawlies which is only a small percentage of people that have a dust mite allergy. We have cats which I’m not allergic to thankfully and it constantly picks up hair off the floor from them cuz we are always cleaning the pre-filter daily.I’ve used a trick with the carbon filter which is to wash it off with water let it dry and then very gently on low use a hair dryer to dry it not only does this finish drying it completely but it probably heats up the carbon which in theory would help renew it.This model does feature Wi-Fi access to an app where you can control the machine from your phone but we couldn’t get it connected and we didn’t try again because it wasn’t really a feature we were interested in.This purifier is one of the more highly recommended purifiers from all of the experts on YouTube I didn’t say influencers I said experts. Science guys with actual degrees and/or experience in HVAC or purification experts that do so for a living and have YouTube channels.
